Evensong has to be loveliest service in the Anglican prayer book. Coming, as it does, at sunset, it is a wonderful time to pause and meditate on the day that has passed. The service is even more beautiful when sung as it was this evening by the choir at St. Thomas in Rondebosch. One comes away feeling completely uplifted.
There are memories here for us. We’ve attended beautiful evensongs at the St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Dallas, led by our dear friend Michie. We’ve sat in the awe inspiring places of Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. We’ve attended evensong at small churches like St. Michael’s in Aldbourne and St. Mary’s in Oxford. The sounds and the prayers of each of these places blend in one’s memory making a particular service that much more memorable.
